Q: How to maximize your conference experience?

“Just because you’re a student, doesn't mean you aren’t an integral part of this community!”

- OTU Student Chapter

Here are some tips from previous student attendees to help you make the most of your conference experience. By following these suggestions, you can enhance your learning, build valuable connections, and find inspiration for your academic and professional journeys:

  • Set Clear Goals: Before the conference, outline what you hope to achieve, such as networking, learning specific skills, or exploring career opportunities. This will help you stay focused and make the most of your time.
  • Plan Your Schedule: Review the conference app to access the schedule and make an agenda. This will help with prioritizing sessions, workshops, and activities that align with your goals. Make a plan but also be flexible to take advantage of unexpected opportunities.
  • Network Actively: Make a point to connect with as many people as possible and take advantage of networking opportunities to engage with other attendees, speakers, and exhibitors. Engaging actively can deepen your understanding and help you connect with others who share your interests.
  • Share Your Experience: Consider writing a blog post or sharing your insights with your peers or through your student chapter. This can help reinforce your learning and inspire others to attend future conferences. If you’re coming with a group, split up and attend different sessions. This way, you can maximize your learning opportunities by coming together after and sharing what you learned.
  • Attend Social Events: Participate in social events and informal gatherings to meet people in a relaxed setting. These interactions can lead to meaningful connections and collaborations.
  • Engage with Exhibitors: Visit exhibitor booths to learn about new resources, programs, and opportunities in PHE. This can also provide insights into potential internships or job openings.
  • Reflect After Each Day: Take time each day to reflect on what you learned and how you can apply it to your studies or future career. This can help solidify your knowledge and identify areas for further exploration.
  • Share Your Experience: After the conference, consider writing a blog post or sharing your insights with your peers or through your student chapter. This can help reinforce your learning and inspire others to attend future conferences.

Q: How to keep the cost down?

As students, attending conferences can often feel prohibitively expensive and financially burdensome, especially when you are already managing tuition and other essential expenses without the benefit of full-time and consistent employment.

Here are some tips for students to help keep costs down when attending the PHE National Conference:

  • Early Registration: Take advantage of early-bird/regular registration rates to secure the best price for conference attendance. The price increases after the regular registration period for students.
  • Group Discounts: Coordinate with classmates or your PHE Canada Student Chapter to register as a group. Many conferences offer discounts for group registrations.
  • Travel Grants and Scholarships: Research and apply for travel grants or scholarships that may be available for students attending the conference. Check with your university or professional organizations for funding opportunities.
  • Shared Accommodations: Consider sharing a hotel room with fellow attendees to split costs. Look for accommodations that offer student rates, group discounts, or budget-friendly lodging, such as hostels, shared accommodations, or hotels.
  • Networking for Shared Costs: Connect with other attendees to share accommodation and transportation costs. Many students find it helpful to create a group for shared expenses. If you are interested in this option, make sure to click this box in your registration and/or contact [email protected].
  • Utilize Student Resources: Check if your school offers financial support or resources for attending conferences. Some institutions have funds set aside specifically for student professional development.
  • Plan Ahead: Budget your expenses in advance, including travel, accommodations, meals, and registration fees, to ensure you stay within your financial means.
