Awards and Recognition

PHE Canada’s Lifetime Achievement Award is one of the highest honours bestowed by PHE Canada. It is presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary and life-long dedication to the advancement of quality Physical Education, Health Education and/or healthy school practices across Canada.

Up to three (3) recipients are selected for this award each conference cycle.

Who may Nominate?

Anyone may nominate an individual, group, or organization for this award. This includes provincial/territorial physical and health education association members, PHE Canada and Provincial/Territorial Association staff, public health professionals, colleagues, parents, students, or any individual wishing to highlight the exceptional work of an individual, group or organization implementing a Health Promoting Schools program. Nominations from underrepresented groups are encouraged.

Eligibility

  • Has at least 20 years experience as a teacher, researcher, coach, supervisor or administrator, etc. in Canada;
  • Has an affiliation with their national, provincial or territorial Physical and Health Education and Education sector; and,
  • Has not previously received this award.

Selection Criteria

This award recognizes those who have made significant impact on physical education, health education and/or healthy school and who have served the profession over an extended period of time. Nominations from underrepresented groups are encouraged. To qualify, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrates a sustained commitment to and engagement in the fields of Physical Education and Health Education and/or Healthy Schools;
  • Contributes to building knowledge and practice contributing to the evolution of the field;
  • Exhibits exemplary leadership within the education community; and,
  • Is recognized as respected expert and role model in the field, reflecting the values and mission of PHE Canada.

This criteria framework ensures that the award honours individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact on the field, reflecting the values and mission of PHE Canada.

Nomination Process

Nominations must be submitted online, accompanied by:

  • Nominator Details: Names and contact information of three nominators.
  • Biographical Sketch: A 250-300 word overview of the nominee's career and contributions.
  • Nomination Letters: A 1-2 page letter from the first nominator detailing the nominee's qualifications.
  • Reference Letters: Two additional one-page letters of reference, with at least one from within the Physical Education, Health Education and/or Healthy Schools field.
  • Supporting Documentation: Up to five pages showcasing the nominee’s contributions to the field.
  • Deadline: All components must be received by the specified deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Selection Process

PHE Canada’s review team is composed of PHE Canada Board Members, subject matter experts, and partners from education, health, culture, sport and recreation. In addition, the review committee has two youth members. This team works collaboratively to ensure a thorough and impartial evaluation process, maintaining the integrity and prestige of our awards.

Selection Process:

  • Review: PHE Canada reviews each nomination for completeness and eligibility.
  • Committee Evaluation: Nominations are forwarded to the PHE Canada Awards Committee for assessment.
  • Decision: Recipients are selected based on their alignment with the award's criteria.

Award Presentation and Benefits

Recipients of this award will receive the following:

  • Recognition: Recipients receive an award plaque and are acknowledged at PHE Canada's Awards Ceremony, annual report, and on the website.
  • Registration: Complimentary registration at the next conference (travel and accommodation not included).
