The PHE Canada Research Council Circle of Distinction Status honours members of the Research Council who, through their research and scholarship have made a distinguished contribution to the advancement of the field of physical and health education, and have given exceptional service to this organization throughout their scholarly careers.

Who May Nominate?
Members of the PHE Canada Research Council.
Eligibility
To be eligible for nomination for the Circle of Distinction Status, a nominee must meet the following requirements:
- Current (or recent) membership in the PHE Canada Research Council.
- 20 years post-doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited institution.
- Holds or held a rank of Associate or Full Professor.
- Membership in the PHE Canada Research Council extending back over several years.
Selection Criteria
Candidate Attributes to be Considered for Circle of Distinction Status include:
- Demonstrates high standards of professional development and service by contributing directly to the PHE Canada Research Council as evidenced by presentations and engagement at annual Research Forums.
- Made significant contributions to the scientific body of knowledge related to the PHE Canada Research Council.
- Made significant contributions to the organization through service in, but not limited to: membership on PHE Canada Research Council Executive; assisting with the success of PHE Canada Research Council Forums; reviewing for PHE Canada Research Council Research Forums and PHE Canada Research Council awards, and reviewing for AVANTE or Revue phénEPS/PHEnex Journal.
- Published in the PHE Journal, AVANTE, and/or Revue phénEPS/PHEnex Journal.
Nomination and Selection Process
During each award cycle, PHE Canada Research Council will determine an appropriate nomination deadline. Nominations should be submitted online, with accompanying documentation submitted electronically.
- The candidate is nominated by two members of the PHE Canada Research Council. These members submit letters of recommendation through the online nomination form.
- Nominations and related documentation are forwarded to the PHE Canada Research Council Executive Past Chair.
- After receiving the two letters of recommendation, the PHE Canada Research Council Executive Past Chair will establish that the candidate meets the “Candidate Attributes to be Eligible for Circle of Distinction Status.” If these required attributes are determined to be met, the PHE Canada Research Council Executive Past Chair will request that the nominators of the candidate forward a current and complete CV of the nominated candidate, as well as a one-page document summarizing how the candidate satisfies the “Candidate Attributes to be Considered for Circle of Distinction Status.”
- The PHE Canada Research Council Executive evaluates the application package (i.e., reference letters, CV, one page summary) to decide whether the candidate meets all requirements and is consequently suitable for this recognition. Approval of the nominee will be achieved by a super majority (60%) vote of PHE Canada Research Council Executive.*
Status Presentation and Benefits
The Circle of Distinction Status will normally be conferred in the presence of the candidate at the PHE Canada Research Council Forum. Conferral of the Circle of Distinction Status normally will come with:
- a lifetime membership in the PHE Canada Research Council,
- a commemorative Circle of Distinction Status acknowledgement (e.g., gift, parchment, plaque),
- free lifetime registration for the Research Forum (travel is not included), and
- recognition in the Research Council e-newsletter.
In Special Cases
*The PHE Canada Research Council Executive reserves the right to waive the requirements. The use of the waiver is restricted to truly exceptional applicants who have a distinguished record of contributions to the goals of the PHE Canada Research Council for more than ten years. The PHE Canada Research Council Executive may also withdraw the Circle of Distinction Status based on ethical considerations. In both cases unanimity of the votes of the PHE Canada Research Council Executive is necessary.
General Information
Normally, no more than 15% of active PHE Canada Research Council members may hold Circle of Distinction Status.
