Jane Arkell
October 2, 1957 - December 27, 2023
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jane Arkell on December 27, 2023. Throughout her career, Jane dedicated herself to promoting access and inclusion for individuals with disabilities, particularly in the realms of physical activity, physical and health education, recreation, and sports.
In her role as the Executive Director of the Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability (ALACD), Jane fervently advocated for equal opportunities and resources in the field of health promotion for people with disabilities. Her impactful contributions include supporting the Paralympic Games; championing for federal accessibility legislation before the Canadian House of Commons; and collaborating with PHE Canada to develop guidebooks, teaching aids, and professional development opportunities, ensuring the provision of high-quality learning experiences for all students.
Jane's significant contributions are evident in various PHE Canada publications, such as the Physical Literacy and All Abilities, the Canadian Physical and Health Education Competencies, Return to School – Canadian PHE Guidelines, and more. In addition, Jane served on several PHE Canada committees to help inform and guide key PHE Canada initiatives and operations, including PHE Canada’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee; Intramural and After School Committee; and Review and Endorsement Committee. Jane's legacy will continue to impact students, educators, and our sector for years to come.
Jane's dedicated friendship and partnership will be missed. Our heartfelt thoughts are with her family and friends.
