What do you do when your boss is a bully
Dr. Hibbert explores the strategy of contextualizing the behaviour of a bully. By trying to understand the behaviour within the context of the other person’s mental health, stressors, and/or struggles, you can begin to see where the behaviour might be coming from. This allows you to take a more balanced approach and avoid blaming yourself or thinking that you did something wrong. Dr. Hibbert also discusses vocalizing boundaries and teaching others what you will--and will not—tolerate.
Peter Bates talks about bullying as an intentional, repetitive behaviour that has a power imbalance and outlines specific steps to follow when bullying is occurring. Peter suggests that even teachers in vulnerable positions (e.g. those without a permanent contract or position) should still reach out for help if they are struggling with bullying in a school as sometimes the ministry can work with confidential and anonymous cases.
