Middle Level Rise and Shine and K to 8 Kindness Club
This promising practice highlights two initiatives in a Kindergarten to grade 8 school: a unique start to the school day and a kindness club. Many of the students’ parents travel the city to work from this rural area and get home late each day. This makes it difficult for students to pursue activities outside school hours. The school implements the Rise and Shine initiative where students spend the first 20 minutes of the school day participating in an activity of their choice. In addition to the Rise and Shine initiative, the school has also implemented the Kindness Club. Dedicated time each morning is provided for students to organize kind acts throughout the day that make small waves of change throughout the school. These are non-academic interventions that help support pro-social behaviors by both supporting the interests of students and by creating a different connection to school staff and their school.
