Do the benefits of social and emotional learning programs last?
Research in brief
This two-page research review answers the following questions: Do the beneficial effects, for students, of social and emotional learning programs remain after the programs are gone? Are they really predictors of future success?
Their findings suggest that the best long-term effects were found in programs focused on skill development as opposed to attitude development.
The beneficial effects discussed include increases in positive social and emotional assets and positive indicators of well-being, as well as decreases in conduct problems and emotional distress. Details of the SEL programs used in this meta-analysis, such as the structure and content delivered, are briefly discussed.
