Call for Focus Group Participants

Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada) and our research partner at Simon Fraser University are undertaking a research project that aims to increase the participation of LGBTQ2S+ (i.e. non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender) youth in physical activity and sport at school by giving voice to youth in the design and implementation of a physical activity programming rooted in equity, inclusion, and the right to play.

Are you an LGBTQ2S+ student in grade 9-12? Whether an athlete or a couch potato (or somewhere in between), we’re looking for students to take part in a focus group to talk about their experiences with school physical activity and sport. We want to talk to you whether you participate or not. The online focus group takes 1-1.5-hours. To thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge, we’ll give you $50.

Are you a teacher or administrator that is interested in discussing your experiences with LGBTQ2S+ students in physical activity and sport? Participate in our online focus group (1-1.5-hours). To thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge, we’ll give you $50.

After completing a focus group, participants will be extended an invitation to take part in an optional virtual design lab, where they will collaboratively develop an action plan to increase LGBTQ2S+ student participation in school-based physical activity and sport. We’ll also design proactive engagement strategies to build awareness, understanding, and a welcoming physical activity environment for LGBTQ2S+ students. This work will then be summarized by PHE Canada and made available publicly to interested students and school staff.

If you are interested in participating in the focus group, please fill out the form at www.surveymonkey.ca/r/SPIRITproject and a member of our team will be in contact within two business days.

If you have any questions about this research project, please contact KJ Reed, [email protected].
